The Compact Group of Galaxies Hcg 31 Is in an Early Phase of Merging

چکیده
We have obtained high spectral resolution (R = 45900) Fabry-Perot velocity maps of the Hickson Compact Group HCG 31 in order to revisit the important problem of the merger nature of the central object A+C and to derive the internal kinematics of the candidate tidal dwarf galaxies in this group. Our main findings are: (1) double kinematic components are present throughout the main body of A+C, which strongly suggests that this complex is an ongoing merger (2) regions A2 and E, to the east and south of complex A+C, present rotation patterns with velocity amplitudes of ∼ 25 km s and they counterrotate with respect to A+C, (3) region F, which was previously thought to be the best example of a tidal dwarf galaxy in HCG 31, presents no rotation and negligible internal velocity dispersion, as is also the case for region A1. HCG 31 presents an undergoing merger in its center (A+C) and it is likely that it has suffered additional perturbations due to interactions with the nearby galaxies B, G and Q. The Compact Group–fossil Group Connection: Observations of a Massive Compact Group at Z=0.22
It has been suggested that fossil groups could be the canibalized remains of compact groups, that lost energy through tidal friction. However, in the nearby universe, compact groups which are close to the merging phase and display a wealth of interacting features (such as HCG 31 and HCG 79) have very low velocity dispersions and poor neighborhoods, unlike the massive, cluster-like fossil groups...
متن کاملMolecular Gas and Infrared Emission in Hcg 31 & Hcg 92 (stephan's Quintet) and Tidal Interactions in Compact Group Environment
We present the interferometric measurements of 2.6 mm CO (J = 1 ! 0) emission (F W HM 5 00) and the analysis of IRAS HIRES images of two Hickson Compact Groups HCG 31 and HCG 92 (\Stephan's Quintet"). The far infrared (FIR) emission is concentrated to a single region in HCG 31 while it is clearly extended and peaks near the group center in HCG 92. CO emission is weak in HCG 31, and the brightes...
متن کاملUnderstanding low and high velocity dispersion compact groups
A galaxy system must have a minimum velocity dispersion for its mass to be greater than the sum of the masses of its galaxies. Nearly half of the nearby Hickson compact groups (HCGs) have too low a velocity dispersion in comparison with the rotational velocities of their spiral galaxies and internal velocity dispersions of their early types. A detailed study of the low velocity dispersion group...
متن کاملThe Kinematics of the Warm Gas in the Interacting Hickson Compact Group of Galaxies Hcg 90
We present kinematic observations of Hα emission for two early-type galaxies and one disk system, members of the Hickson compact group 90 (HCG 90) obtained with a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer and samplings of 16 km s −1 and 1 ′′. Mapping of the gas kinematics was possible to ∼ 2 r ef f for the disk galaxy N7174 and to ∼ 1.3 r ef f and ∼ 1.7 r ef f for the early-type galaxies N7176 and N7...
متن کاملDynamical effects of interactions and the Tully-Fisher relation for Hickson compact groups
We investigate the properties of the B-band Tully-Fisher (T-F) relation for 25 compact group galaxies, using Vmax derived from 2-D velocity maps. Our main result is that the majority of the Hickson Compact Group galaxies lie on the T-F relation. However, about 20% of the galaxies, including the lowest-mass systems, have higher B luminosities for a given mass, or alternatively, a mass which is t...
